From the mill to the fruit brandies

The history of Scheibel distillery began at Grüner Winkel 7. And just a few meters away from the distillery , the Scheibel Mühle still stands today. Founder Emil Scheibel worked in the family mill business from a young age. However, the many farmers who preferred to pay in kind, such as cherry or plum water, gave the then 22-year-old an idea. He began trading in schnapps and soon delivered the first bottles to Berlin and Leipzig.
Emil Scheibel then established his own distillery at Grüner Winkel 32 in Kappelrodeck in 1921. His son Louis and grandson Michael continued the family mill legacy over the years, with the distillery growing in importance over the generations.

From fruit brandies to whisky

In 1986, the Scheibel family decided to close the mill as it was no longer profitable. The Scheibel mill sank into a deep slumber. It was only when the building was included in the redevelopment of the town center of Kappelrodeck that Michael Scheibel decided to bring the mill back to life. The connecting element between the Scheibel mill and the Scheibel distillery was soon found: EMILL - whisky from the mill.
The building was extensively renovated and extended for this purpose. A separate still was also installed for distilling the whisky, in which only Scheibel whisky is distilled - an important quality feature. Head distiller Frank Blechschmidt began producing the first distillates at the end of 2014. In order for these to be sold as whisky, they must be aged for at least three years.

A Black Forest
Original

The story of our whisky begins more than 100 years ago. Emil Scheibel, the son of a miller, was born in the Black Forest village of Kappelrodeck. This should definitely be mentioned here, as it comes as no surprise that Emil's later "burning passion" is predetermined by so many "schnapps numbers". Emil works in his parents' flour mill from a young age. He is hard-working, a real thick-skull in some things, always non-conformist, a little stubborn perhaps, but gentle at heart. Above all, however, he is a smart guy who prefers to go his own way. In short: a real character. A "Black Forest original", from whose eventful life there are still many episodes to tell today.

How Emil became
became EMILL

The myth in a glass gradually began to emerge when Emil took over his parents' mill in his early twenties. The chronic lack of money among Black Forest farmers, who preferred to pay in kind in the form of home-distilled fruit brandy, gave Emil the idea of trading in the "liquid mill wages". He soon delivers the first bottles of fruit brandy to Berlin and Leipzig. Demand increased, and in 1921, founder Emil Scheibel finally established his own fruit distillery - just a cork's throw away from the Scheibel mill. Son Louis and grandson Michael continue the family legacy of the mill over the years. And over the generations, their distillery has grown in importance. In complete contrast to the milling business. As this was no longer profitable, the family decided to close the mill in 1986, after which it sank into a deep slumber. It is finally Emil's grandson, Michael Scheibel, who comes up with the courageous plan to bring the gem of a mill back to life. And he wouldn't be a real Scheibel if Michael hadn't put this crazy idea into practice - despite all the doubters. The connecting element between Scheibel's grain mill, the characterful Emil and the Scheibel distillery is soon found:
